Child Trust Funds can be withdrawn on the owner's  18th birthday. Of the 525,000 accounts which matured between Sept 1, 2020 and May 31, 2021 - 305,000 accounts worth  £554 million – have gone unclaimed.

In total, two million accounts – one in three – are now coded 'lost' due to a lack of account activity. 

Beneficiaries often fail to register a change of address after a move, and many never knew or simply forgot about the funds.
